Discuss the challenges involved in conducting African irregular and polyrhythmic ideas or music (discuss at least five).

Giving the tempo- a conductor shows the chorus the exact tempo to follow. While conducting African music it is hard to choose the exact tempo to follow since there is polyrhythm and irregular time involved.

There is no particular arm movement- while conducting you need to use your arm to conduct, different time signatures have different ways of conducting. Therefore while conducting African music, since most African music has irregular time and many rhythmic ideas put together it will result to difficulty in the arm movements.

Cueing in- in African music the rhythmic ideas tend to show some difficulty while cuing in since there are several rhythmic ideas and most of them are in irregular time.

Showing dynamics- A conductor has a task of showing the dynamics to the chorus. In African music due to the presence of polyrhythm and irregular time, showing these dynamics will be a task since the conductor is conducting many different rhythmic ideas at once.

Ending the chorus- in African music, it is hard to derive an ending, this is because the African music consists of many rhythms that most of the time end in different times.
