By: Ogeya Nanchah.

1.Below are ways of employing ear training for aural recognition of triads and seventh chords:

(a) Listening to several videos on triads and seventh chords and having in mind that major chords sound happy. Should use the middle keys of the piano for easy hearing of the pitches.

(b) Registering in mind that minor chords sound sad through listening to several videos on major and minor chords.

Below are some you tube videos that aid this.

2. The following are the challenges faced by students during aural training sessions:

(a)Lack of enough individual practice.

Many students tend to ignore practice forgetting that consistent practice gives one long term results mainly positive. Therefore failure to practice gives students lots of challenges in identifying triads and seventh chords.

(b)  Negative attitude towards chords and triads is a big challenge to learners when it comes to recognizing triads and seventh chords.

(c) Lack of practicing Inversions, where a good number of students do more practice on triads and chords in root position and forget about inversions hence a challenge in recognizing triads and chords in 1st, 2nd and 3rd inversions.

 (d) Bad means of practice for example when a student practices with an off-tuned instrument. This will surely misguide the student.

(e) Failure of a student to familiarize himself with intervals will definitely give him a challenge in recognizing triads and seventh chords.
